Verdict: Five stars.
When a rom-com which has entertained generations of movie fans gets turned into a musical, you are always going to be apprehensive that the magic of watching that story unfold for the first time could get lost.
Those worries however quickly faded as Pretty Woman The Musical more than impressed during the first night of its two week run at Glasgow's Theatre Royal.
The show stays true to the plot of the 1990 film which became an instant hit thanks to the charm of Richard Gere who played billionaire Edward Lewis and the rags to riches tale captured beautifully by Julia Roberts as prostitute Vivian Lewis.
The touring production features the multi-talented Amber Davies who steps into the role of Vivian. While Davies is widely known for her appearance on Love Island, she has proven her credibility as a theatre star with lead roles in musical productions of Bring It On, 9 to 5 and Back to the Future.
She was joined by actor Oliver Savile who portrayed Edward, and together their chemistry was just magical as they took the audience on a journey into their characters' love story.
Pretty Woman follows Edward who is in the middle of a huge business deal and decides to acquire the services of prostitute Vivian. After they both agree that she will spend a week with him for payment, Vivian is introduced into a world she could only dream of and treated like a lady by her client who she begins to fall for.
The show also features the talents of legendary singer Bryan Adams who created the musical numbers with his long time song writing partner Jim Vallance. This creates a soundtrack of great rock ballads that have that unmistakable Adams' feel to them.
The music adds a new dimension to the story with the vocals of Davies impressing throughout. She is captivating to watch, funny and believable. She is in sync with Savile who matches her on the vocal front and steps with ease into the character that is loved by so many. The supporting cast of Ore Oduba who has a few roles and Natalie Paris as Kit De Luca boost the overall show creating laughs for the audience and thrilling with choreography.
Despite the unconventional story, Pretty Woman: The Musical leave you smiling from ear to ear. It is a show with a feel good factor that will has you tapping your toes to the incredible songs created by one of rock music's greatest performers.
Catch Pretty Woman: The Musical in Glasgow until Saturday, November 25.
