The start of new trains being introduced to Glasgow’s Subway has led to calls for the service to be extended into Sunday evenings.

Currently, the system closes at 6pm on Sundays leading to many people seeking alternative transport to get home after work or nights out.

SPT, which operates the Subway, said extended opening is its aim and is working towards it.

After the first new trains, since 1980, were in place earlier this week politicians in the city called for the opening hours extension.

Thomas Kerr, Conservative councillor, said: “The introduction of new and greatly modernised trains on Glasgow’s subway is very welcome to see.

“Our ‘clockwork orange’ underground system is one of the most iconic around the world. “Glaswegians and visitors alike have waited a long time to see trains upgraded on the network, so they will be excited to undertake journeys on them.

“However, this significant investment should not be the end of improvements on the subway. For far too long the archaic 6pm closure of the subway on a Sunday night has hampered our night-time economy and affected those who rely on it for work.”

Paul Sweeney, Labour MSP, said: “It has been exciting to see the first two of the long-awaited Stadler-built Subway trains introduced this week, after a series of delays. This transition period is precisely the time for SPT to signal its intent to extend operating hours once the full transition from the current semi-automatic train operation system to full unattended train operation, including the installation of platform screen doors, has been completed.

"There is fantastic goodwill behind SPT to make the case for extended operating hours from the public, businesses and politicians across Glasgow.”

A spokesperson for SPT said: “This is the first two new trains in the system out of the new fleet, but there are more major milestones ahead to reach.

“We are committed to extended Sunday opening and we are building that into how we operate in the future once we complete other major works such as implementing the new signalling and communications system and platform screen doors are introduced.”
