New types of housing developments with strangers sharing kitchens in large buildings with 50 plus bedrooms has led to the draft of new planning Glasgow guidance.

Glasgow City Council is current holding a consultation on large scale communal living, which is a new type of housing expected to arrive in the city.

It sees people moving into a property and sharing kitchens, living rooms and other spaces but having their own bedrooms. A number of the developments can be seen in London and some believe it could help with a housing crisis in providing places to live for young people.

A consultation draft of the guidance said the local authority is proposing the developments should only be limited to Glasgow city centre currently.

People are being invited to give their views, which will help shape the guidance. It considers details such as how many people should share a cooker and the number of washing machines required.

The guidance is to deal with developments with 50 or more bedrooms – with the buildings differentiated from houses of multiple occupation.

The council said: ” This is a relatively new type of housing to Glasgow. Given the significant potential impact this type of accommodation may have on housing choice we would like to hear your views. The landscape around co-living housing is evolving rapidly, and the concept of personal living spaces combined with shared amenity and recreational spaces is being promoted by the development industry.

“The aim of our survey is to gather insights that will contribute to the development of effective planning guidance for Co-Living proposals, ensuring that they meet the needs of occupants and developing a better understanding of how to deliver high quality design.”

The consultation will run until January 18.
