Meet the Glasgow cats looking for their forever home in 2024

Around 50 cats are currently in the care of the charity across the city, with adoptions having been paused from December 18 until the beginning of 2024.

Kira Morrison, deputy manager at Glasgow South Homing Centre, joined Cats Protection in November following a career in hospitality management and says so far it’s been "great".

She was inspired to apply for a role after she adopted her own cat Layla from the charity in June.

She explained: "Everyone was so helpful and supportive.

"They do follow up calls and when I got my cat I thought ‘this is a great organisation’.

"When I saw they were hiring I had had such a positive experience getting my own cat I thought ‘I’d like to be a part of that’."

Kira says her favourite part of the job, as well as spending time with all the cats, is feeling like you’re doing something to help both them and people.

She continued: "It's lovely seeing cats going away to their new homes and people come in so excited.

"It's lovely seeing people coming like ‘I’m here to pick up a kitten’ with a smile on their faces."

She is one of several members of staff who will be working alongside volunteers at the centre to make sure the cats still enjoy the festive season despite not having permanent homes.

On Christmas Day staff even cooked up a special meal for them.

Kira said: "A lot of people dropped off Christmas presents for the cats which was lovely and then we don’t just give them bog standard cat food.

"You get frozen chicken, frozen fish, and cook that up for them so they’ve got a nice change.

"And people spend a lot more time with the cats to make it a bit nicer."

And while Kira is fond of all the cats in the centre’s care, there are a few looking for new homes in 2024 that have stood out to her*.

Kira

Kira is a friendly black and white cat who has been in the care of Cats Protection for some time but has only had one application so far.

Kira said of her namesake: "She’s absolutely lovely and such a sweetheart.

"She gets spooked quite easily so I think people are maybe a bit hesitant to take cats like that in case they get stressed out."

Lucky

Adventurous Lucky is a gorgeous tabby cat who is looking for an outdoor or rural home with no other pets.

He is full of energy and needs a home with space to roam and explore.

Kira said: "He doesn’t get on very well with other animals in the neighbourhood so he needs a farm home or stables so he has all the space to roam.

"He’s been here quite a long time because he came in with his jaw wired shut because it was broken and that has a long recovery time so we’re really hoping to find him a home.

"He is lovely."

Vega

Vega is an older cat who loves attention and would make a great companion.

Kira said: "No one seems interested in him, I think because he’s a bit older and looks like he’s been through the wars.

"He came in because there were other animals in his household he wasn’t getting along very well with so his owner gave him to us."

Cats Protection Glasgow South Homing Centre is located at Unit 3, 47 Haggs Road, Glasgow and is open Wednesday to Monday from 11am to 3pm.
