MORE parents living in certain parts of Glasgow are to get free childcare outside school hours.
It is part of a pilot scheme to provide school age childcare “targeted at the poorest families” funding by the Scottish Government.
Those that could qualify include single parents, families with a disabled adult or child, young mums under 25 and minority ethnic families.
A number of people living in council wards Drumchapel, Anniesland and East Centre, which covers Cranhill and Carntyne were chosen in 2022 to receive help with their childcare bills for their school children.
Last year the Southside Central area, which includes Govanhill and the Gorbals was included in the scheme.
This upcoming financial year the council is hoping to win £4 million to bring the childcare boost to additional areas in Calton, Govan, Linn, Canal and Garscadden, Scotstounhill.
The council is waiting on confirmation of funding for the financial year ahead.
Details of the childcare expansion as well as an update on nursery care will be presented to the council’s education, skills and early years city policy committee next week.
Glasgow, Dundee, Clackmannanshire and Inverclyde were selected to test out the pilot school aged childcare aimed at families on the lowest incomes in 2022.
About 5,000 Glasgow school pupils are currently in childcare at 60 schools and 24 community buildings – which is equivalent to about 12 per cent primary pupils in the city.
The school age childcare is provided by third sector partners or private businesses.
