Passengers heading to Glasgow have been halted in the north of England as Storm Isha led to train services being cancelled.

Hundreds of people travelling from London to Glasgow were told their train was terminating at Preston as it was not safe to continue.

The 13.19 London Euston to Glasgow Central service was stopped at Preston late on Sunday afternoon and passengers told to disembark.

On the station platform, many told how they hoped an earlier train could see them stay ahead of the incoming storm.

Glasgow Times:

John McMillian, said: "We just found out all travel north has been suspended. “I'm not sure how we are going to get home now, so it is pretty stressful."

Louise Devine, said: "I was coming back from my sister's hen do with my pals but now I’m gubbed.

“I think we are just going to get a hotel though because it doesn't feel safe to travel anymore."

Scott McMurray said: "I was meant to get a much later train from London, but they stopped the services because of the storm.

"I thought I had gotten ahead of it by getting an earlier train, but now I'm stuck in Preston. I hope I get home soon."

Lisa Donnelly said: "The weather is wild, the rain is actually horizontal.

"It doesn't feel safe to be out, so I understand why they are calling it a code black and stopping everything.

“I thought we could have gotten in front of it, but no luck. I will need to arrange for someone to feed my cat because I am going to get a hotel."

Mary Duncan, said: "We have just been put off at Preston, nowhere near Glasgow.

"They will try and put buses on, but I think they are limited."

Brian Dudd said: "It's the same story anytime there's a bit of wind and rain. public transport just breaks."

Earlier in the day Avanti West Coast, which runs the service warned of possible disruption to travel north.

At around 2pm Avanti tweeted “We are operating a reduced timetable today 21 January, with the last trains of the day departing at 16:00.

It also warned: “Due to the severe weather forecast with Storm Isha, customers are advised strongly not to travel today, Sunday 21 January. Tickets dated 21 January will be valid on Monday 22 or Tuesday 23 January.”

On its website, Avanti West Coast stated: "Due to the severe weather forecast with Storm Isha, speed restrictions are in place across all our routes on Sunday 21 January. We’re also operating a reduced timetable – with the last trains of the day to/from Euston departing around 16:00.

“As a result, we strongly advise customers do not attempt to travel on Sunday 21 January.

“Customers making journeys between London and Scotland should not travel north of Preston after 12:00 and are strongly advised to complete journeys south of Preston by 18:00.”
