A TREBLE-winning Glasgow girls’ football club has been given a huge boost with government cash for new facilities.

Glasgow Girls and Women FC, based in Springboig, will get £620,000 for a new artificial pitch.

The club said it will be a massive benefit to the teams and the community.

The club’s Under 16 just won all three trophies in their age group, the League, Challenge Cup and West League Cup.

The girls explained what football means to them and how a new pitch will help.

Brooke Wilson, 15, said: “It’s a big part of life. Being a part of this club has been a great experience.”

Lauren Abraham, 15, said: “In the winter it’s hard to play on. It will be better for us and the community.”

The club has a senior team playing in the SWPL 2 and a range of age groups for the youth set-up from under 8s to under 18s.

The new facilities are needed to allow training and matches to go ahead whatever the weather, and to give footballing opportunities to as many girls as possible.

The girls from the 14s and 16s age groups took part in a training session on the pitch and showed off their recently won trophies as a UK government minister and the President of the Scottish Football Association visited.

Glasgow Times:

Malcolm Offord, UK Government minister for Scotland said the investment will have long-term benefits.

He said it would be “short-sighted” not to invest now in projects that encourage young people to be fit and active.

On a visit to the club, to see the current facilities, he added: “The ground is too soft for training and playing.

“We can get more teams playing (on an artificial pitch). That will benefit the club.”

Glasgow Times:

He said investment like this from the government and SFA is “key to growing the girls' game”.

He added: “What is emerging in Glasgow is there is a real investment across the city.”

The club is one of ten projects in Glasgow to get a share of the funding.

Across Scotland, 40 projects to upgrade grassroots facilities have been announced by the government with the SFA.

Glasgow Times:

Mike Mulraney, SFA President, said: “One of the priorities for the Scottish FA is ensuring that local communities across the nation have access to facilities, so it is wonderful to see the UK Government’s commitment to investing in our national game through the Scottish FA’s Grassroots Pitch & Facilities Fund.

“This investment will provide opportunities for a number of fantastic community clubs across the country such as Glasgow Girls and Women FC and will play an important role in further developing the vitally important role that these clubs offer within their local areas.”
