Children from a Glasgow Primary School visited the City Chambers for a special St Valentine’s Day recital.
Jim Carruth, Glasgow’s poet laureate, read his Valentine’s Day Poem ‘Holding Hands’ for the Lord Provost and children from Sacred Heart Primary School.
The poem was written during the Covid pandemic reflecting on his and his wife’s relationship.
Holding Hands by Jim Carruth
Swollen and clumsy with physical work
Stiff fingers interlaced by difficult years shared
Valleyed palms pressed
Passionate kisses from before
Common ground is found in the grip of hard skin on blister
Comfort too in clasping this rough handscape close
Where thumb rubbing knuckle is a hundred words on love
