A group has revealed why they hand out free Greggs in Glasgow every week.
The Scottish Tenants Organisation (STO) invited the Glasgow Times to see them giving away pastries across the city.
The group put their money together and buy around 30 items and bottles of water for homeless people every Tuesday.
We watched the team give six homeless people their lunch within just three minutes of leaving the Greggs shop on Argyle Street.
STO continued to feed vulnerable people sitting on street corners outside shops with all the bags emptied in under an hour.
This also included breaks and stopping to talk to some homeless people.
Sean Clearkin is the campaign organiser for the group and spoke to the Glasgow Times about why they are committed to helping.
He explained: “The homeless situation in Glasgow is a complete scandal, there are just so many people on the streets.
“We come out every week and buy a Greggs for them out of our own pocket, we can’t get round everyone but we do our best.
“Sometimes we recognise people but sometimes they change, we have never seen this many women out on the streets either.
“We give them sausage rolls, chicken bakes, and water, but it isn’t enough. The council desperately needs to start housing these people.”
We previously reported how the city recorded 1,355 instances of people being refused temporary accommodation last year, compared to 125 people in Edinburgh.
A report from the Scottish Government claimed the figures were caused by Glasgow City Council’s decision to move away from the use of bed and breakfasts for temporary accommodation.
The statistics looked at figures between April and September 2023, revealing that the number of open homelessness cases across Scotland is at the highest level on record.
The Glasgow Times approached Glasgow council for a comment on these figures.
