A GLASGOW school is celebrating after winning a prestigious sports accolade.
King’s Park Secondary on the Southside of the city achieved gold status in the sportscotland school awards.
Active Schools co-ordinator Robbie Kelly explained: “This is a tremendous achievement for the school after years of hard work by staff and pupils. Only a handful of schools in Glasgow have this award.”
Almost 40 percent of pupils have signed up to after school sports clubs at King’s Park.
“Pupil voice is very important,” added Robbie. “The pupils get to choose what the extra-curricular activities are, and seniors facilitate the lunchtime clubs.”
Pupils studying for a Level 5 sport leaders qualification run three lunchtime clubs, while Level 6 sport leaders help at community cross country events with local primary schools.

“In the last academic year, 37 percent of our school roll took part in extra-curricular sport and physical activity, which is seven percent up on the previous year,” said Robbie.
The school boasts the highest number of sports teams in its history, added Robbie.
“We have S1, S2 and S4 boys and girls’ football teams, and senior boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams, who are both in the quarter finals of the Scottish Volleyball Cup.
“Our S1 boys’ football team won the Glasgow Life S1 seven-a-side winter league.
“Everyone is delighted to have achieved this award.”
Funded by the National Lottery, the sportscotland School Sport Award is a national initiative designed to encourage schools to put young people at the heart of decision making, planning and implementation of extra-curricular school sport.
It also encourages sporting links between schools and the communities around them, providing opportunities for young people to progress.
