MORE than 2000 fans crowded on to Buchanan Street almost 24 years ago when Posh Spice aka Victoria Beckham was in town to promote her new single.
As well as signing autographs and chatting to fans, she gave the gathering crowds a wave out of Virgin Megastore’s top windows.
Victoria, who celebrates her 50th birthday on April 17, was promoting Out of Your Mind, which she recorded with Dane Bowers and True Steppers.
It was not entirely the happiest of visits to Glasgow, however, as newspapers at the time reported she had clashed with Clyde FM DJ George Bowie for playing a record by her rival for a chart number one, Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
During the whirlwind tour, Victoria also appeared on STV's Room At The Top and Scotland Today and enjoyed a clothes-on massage from Scottish masseuse Stephanie Campbell.
Stephanie told The Mirror at the time: “Victoria is really tired from her hectic schedule. She told me she finishes work at one in the morning and is back up at five. She said she could hardly feel her body as she was so tired."
Victoria shot to fame as one fifth of 90s pop group the Spice Girls, who, with more than 100 million records sold worldwide, became the best-selling female group of all time.
They performed in Glasgow only once, in April 1998, for two nights.
The tour was an ear-splitting, eye-popping extravaganza with backing dancers (the Spice Boys), Geri Halliwell on rollerskates, covers of classic hits and more.
In an STV interview, Victoria, Geri, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm revealed that Scotland had a special place in their hearts.
“We have a lot of fond memories of Scotland, of when we were starting out, when we made a video here for a press kit, and did lots at the beginning,” said Geri.
While in Glasgow, Geri was photographed on her way to the Apartment nightclub, and the group stayed at the plush One Devonshire Gardens, where press photographers camped outside to catch a glimpse of the stars before they left the city.
Fans in the city were left bereft when, less than a month later, Geri had left the group, and the world’s most famous all-female quintet was no more.
After they split up for good in 2001, Victoria released a solo album and two top 10 singles with Virgin Records. She is a successful fashion designer, with her own label, which has a huge celebrity following.
She is married to footballer David Beckham and the couple have four children - Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 12.
The star, who is currently recovering from a broken foot, has published a 50th birthday "open letter" on social media, in which she says: "As I get ready to step into 50 (in heels, of course!), I feel so incredibly blessed to have reached this milestone. Blessed, but also accomplished and deeply content.
“Not just of where I am as a woman, but of how far my fashion and beauty brands have come. My ambition was always to empower women and make them feel like the best version of themselves ... I believe that you can be many things. A pop star, a mother, a wife, a designer ... My passion has always been to dream big, then dream even bigger! Believe in yourself first - everyone else will follow.”
