SHOCKED East Kilbride residents woke to discover a bus stop close to local schools had been destroyed overnight.

The shelter, on Westwood Road near its junction with Westwoodhill, had been uprooted and its roof and associated debris and shattered glass covered parts of the path and nearby grass verges and bushes.

Speculation on social media suggested a car had hit the stop in the early hours of Wednesday, April 17.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call to attend an incident on Westwood Road in East Kilbride. We dispatched one ambulance to the scene and checked over one patient.”

A Strathclyde Passenger Transport spokesperson said: “Damage to the bus stop near the junction of Westwoodhill was reported to us and arrangements have been made for our contractor to clean up the area around the stop and make it safe. 

“We will be re-installing a pole/ flag to mark the bus stop shortly and will be engaging with South Lanarkshire Council on replacing the bus shelter at this site. We are not aware of any changes to bus routes due to this incident.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said there had been “no police incidents on Westwood Road in the last 48 hours.”
