"GLASGOW is one of the highlights of every UK tour," Tom Walker says ahead of his O2 Academy shows. 

The singer-songwriter, who was born in Kilsyth, will be performing at the venue on Tuesday, April 30 and Wednesday, May 1.  

"It’s awesome to come home to Glasgow,” he says, "and a lot of my family are still up in Glasgow, my gran and my uncle, a lot of my family come out to see my shows which is always really lovely."

He continued: "I feel like the Glasgow crowd are just the right amount of rowdy, still respectful and love listening to the music and it's such a fun gig every time we play Glasgow. 

"There are other places that don’t have the same excitement and energy."

Tom, who burst onto the scene after the release of his single Leave a Light on in 2018, was initially only supposed to do one Glasgow show on the tour but a second was quickly added after it sold out.  

"We sold the first Glasgow show out so quickly we had to put a second one on," he explains. 

"You never know how these things are going to go when you’ve not had a top 10 in a while and it’s really lovely to see people who are fans of the first album and the first tour we did are still digging it.  

"We’ve not put out an album in a long time and to have nearly sold the tour out is amazing."

Tom says he is "buzzing" to perform tracks on the tour from his second album I Am, which is set to be released later this year.  

It follows his debut album What a Time to Be Alive which was released in March 2019.  

He said: "I’m really anxious to get it out now. I can’t wait to get out on tour and play all the new songs from the album to the fans and see what everybody’s thinking.  

"It’s been a long road to get it finished."

Tom wrote and binned "a whole album’s worth of music" for I Am because it "wasn’t quite right" before heading out to Los Angeles to write with the McDonough brothers, Tony Gadd, Ryan Daly and Castle whose credits between them include Beyonce, Khalid, John Legend and Mimi Webb.  

Tom says the album is now his "favourite piece of work" he’s done to date.  

"It’s exciting because I’ve really pushed the boundaries on production and the vocals,” he says. 

"It’s more of a deep dive into me as a person and the last five years of my life whereas the first album was more and friends and family and experiences with other people.  

"To go away and do the second version of the first album was not something I wanted so I was keen to try and change the narrative on this album and the production, so it sounds completely different to the first."

He continued: "I was really lucky to get in with the McDonough brothers and they totally reignited my passion for music. 

"I felt like I was in a bit of a rut writing and I went out to America to work with them and they do music day and night.  

"They eat it, they sleep it, they breathe it. From 11 o’clock in the morning to 3am we were working for a week solid and we got a couple of great tracks. 

"Then they came over to the UK and did a couple of weeks and we finished the writing for the album in a couple of months."

Tom added: "I’m glad I took a bit more time over it because I’m really happy with the outcome and how it’s sounding."

Tom Walker will be at the O2 Academy on Tuesday, April 30 and Wednesday, May 1.  

He will also play Clyde 1 Live at the OVO Hydro on Friday, May 31.
