HANNAH Boyce is momentarily taken aback when she remembers she graduated from drama school 10 years ago.

“TEN years? Wow,” she exclaims. “It feels like hardly any time at all.”

It has been a busy decade for the Glasgow-trained actor, who will be known to fans of Netflix comedy drama series Sex Education, which made stars of many of its young cast (including a certain 15th Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa.)

Glasgow Times:

“I remember everyone in the cast talking at the start, thinking, well, what is this going to be like?” she explains. “Will people watch it, will they like it? And of course, here we are - it was a big hit and they’re all incredibly famous.”

She adds: “It was great to be part of it and I was so lucky to be able to be in the first season and then come back for the last one.”

Glasgow Times:

Hannah is making her Theatre Royal debut next month as posh Mrs Peacock in comedy mystery caper Cluedo 2.

Starring Casualty’s Jason Durr and Coronation Street’s Ellie Leach – the reigning Strictly Come Dancing champion, who is making her stage acting debut – the show is based on the classic Hasbro board game, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.

Set in the 60s, it has been written by one of the UK’s most successful TV and stage writing duos, BAFTA-winning writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, who also wrote stage musical Dreamboats and Petticoats, which gave Hannah her first role after leaving drama school.

“At rehearsals, I walked in and they were like – we know you,” she laughs. “Cluedo 2 is so much fun.

“It is not a sequel, it’s a completely new story, so even if you have never seen the first one, you can enjoy it.”

Glasgow Times:

She adds: “I play Mrs Peacock, who likes to think she is the lady of the manor, a force to be reckoned with. She becomes more and more unhinged as the story goes on, which is a LOT of fun to play, let me tell you.”

It is, says Hannah, exactly the kind of show we are "all in need of at the moment."

“There’s lots of high farce, deaths – can’t say too much about those obviously – and mysterious goings-on,” she says. “It’s the most silly, fun show, and we all need a bit of a laugh at the moment, so yes, it’s perfect."

Hannah grew up in Milton of Campsie, near Kirkintilloch, and was all set on being a marine biologist until a chance introduction to the world of musical theatre changed her mind.

“I can remember the exact moment,” she nods. “I was 10 years old and I watched a video – VHS, showing my age – of Cats at a friend’s house and it was so cool.

“We got tickets to go and see the live show, and I was really excited. It still didn’t feel like something you’d do for a career, but when my mum and dad explained that yes, it was possible if you really wanted to, I remember thinking – then THIS is what I want to do.”

Hannah gained a place on the Dance School of Scotland’s musical theatre course at Knightswood Secondary.

“It was 100 percent the best start for me – they work you hard, and it’s stressful because as well as your musical theatre studies you are also doing your academic schoolwork, but it was fantastic,” she says.

“I’d recommend it to anyone.”

She is happy switching between television and stage, she says.

“I mean, actors are so fickle, you know?” she laughs. “As soon as you get a job, you’re like, oh yes, THIS is what I was meant to do…but I wouldn’t honestly say I love one more than the other.

“Musicals is where I started and what I thought my career would probably be, but sometimes things can surprise you.

“I loved being on TV, but I’m really enjoying being back on stage.”

Hannah is also trying her hand at directing for the first time.

“It’s new for me, and I’m working on something that hopefully I’ll be able to talk about more nearer Christmas time,” she explains, adding with a laugh: “It’s really fun and exciting.”

She jokes: “And of course, being in charge is always great.”

Hannah’s next big production is her own wedding, as she is marrying her choreographer fiancé Jack Evans in the summer.

“We’re actually not quite sure what we are doing yet, or where, but we are getting married,” she says, cheerfully. “Because of the tour, we don’t have a lot of time to plan.

“I like being busy though, and I’m just pleased to be doing this amazing job, with such an amazing cast.”

Cluedo 2 is at the Theatre Royal from June 4 to 8.
