A Glasgow mum has claimed her mouth blisters are being caused by her “maggot” house.

Denise Kelly has been diagnosed with Strep A causing ulcers on her mouth and throat, which she believes is because of bacteria in her “disgusting” Priesthill property.

The 44-year-old was placed at the address last month after her flat needed urgent repairs, triggering a sudden decant by Wheatley Homes for fire safety reasons.

The housing association claims because of the urgency of the move there was no time to ensure their usual standards, but promised to return to clean the property.

However Wheatley claims they could not get access to the property to do this despite attempts, which Denise denies.

Denise said: “This flat is disgusting. I cannot stay here with my children, it is filthy.

“I have got Strep A which I believe was caused by bacteria within the property which has made me sick. I have blisters on my mouth and throat.

“Wheatley promised a deep clean but that hasn’t happened yet, but there's moths, maggots, flies, and insects everywhere.

“I don’t know how they can put a family in a place like this, we don’t deserve to be here.”

The Glasgow Times spoke to a pest control service who attended the property and confirmed activity was evident but there was not a current live insect infestation. This is because the maggots were dead.

Denise also claims she reported a broken fire door which wasn’t fixed and fell on her son, causing him to injure his leg.

She took him to hospital for treatment and he has been off school as a result. However, Wheatley Homes said they attempted to fix the door but could not get access to the property. Denise also denies this.

Denise said: “I reported that broken door but it wasn’t fixed, and then it fell on my son.

“I had to take him to the hospital because he hurt his leg and has been off school because of this.

“I don’t feel like the property is safe for us and I don’t feel like we are being taken seriously when we complain about it.”

A Wheatley Homes Glasgow spokesperson said: “The tenant got in touch to report bugs in her house. We carried out thorough checks which found no traces of infestation.

“During an inspection, we found significant internal damage, including holes in the walls and the wallpaper stripped.

“We also found a new internal wall, which had been built by the tenant, with poorly-installed wiring and plugs which presented a serious fire risk.

“We worked closely with the family to find emergency accommodation at very short notice.

“We had an empty home which had recently undergone refurbishment work.

“Given her situation, the tenant agreed to move in on the understanding a deep clean would be needed.

"Unfortunately, the tenant hasn’t allowed us to do this. “All of the repairs have been completed in her own home and it was arranged for the family to return this morning. Unfortunately, this offer was refused.

“We’ll continue to do all we can to support the family.”
