A station in Clydebank has installed a bench to boost mental health awareness among residents.
Introduced by Network Rail with the support of ScotRail, West Dunbartonshire Council and the Samaritans, the new ‘breathing space’ bench at the Dalmuir station was unveiled on May 17.
A 'first of its kind in Scotland', more are expected to follow across the country this year.
The bench offers people a safe space to seek help, reflect, communicate, and support one another during challenging moments and episodes of distress.
The rest of the UK has more than 50 similar benches in operation, which have been found to create a supportive environment where people can seek mental health guidance.
The bench prioritises passenger welfare and security and also aims to minimise the distressing effects and emotional impact of tragic incidents where mental health has been a factor.
Ross Moran, route director of Network Rail Scotland, said: “We’re pleased to be able to unveil the new breathing space bench at Dalmuir station.
“This initiative is such an important one and is designed to encourage everyone to sit and reflect, share a bit of time for listening and talking, and to reach out and show kindness and compassion to those who may need it.
“The bench will not only foster a supportive and empathetic atmosphere but will create a sense of unity and understanding among passengers and staff.
“We encourage anyone and everyone who needs to find some breathing space to come and use the bench to think and seek help.”
Dave Brown, senior programme manager at Samaritans, said: "We are pleased to be supporting the breathing space bench.
"Initiatives like this allow people the space to reach a better understanding of their situation and the options open to them."
David Lister, ScotRail safety and sustainability director, added that sitting down and having a chat can make a real difference.
He said: “We’re delighted to work with our colleagues at NHS Breathing Space and Samaritans to deliver this initiative and look forward to seeing more Breathing Space benches installed across Scotland’s Railway.”
