DRUMCHAPEL Pool could reopen in the coming months, it has been revealed.
The public swimming pool was initially closed on October 31, 2022, to undergo a £1.2m renovation.
Work was estimated to take around eight months and the pool was expected to be completed by the end of July 2023.
However, nearly a year on in early October 2023 Glasgow Life confirmed that the presence of RAAC had been detected at the Drumry Road facility.
RAAC, or reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete, is considered a potentially dangerous material as it is less durable than concrete and is prone to collapse when wet, as moisture soaks into its aerated holes.
Now, in an update, Glasgow Life said it had been working to resolve the issue and that the problem was “smaller than at other places” - the presence of RAAC was also detected at the outdoor hall at Glasgow Club Scostoun and various other facilities.
Work is therefore expected to be “easier and quicker” and will begin in early June, following approval from the building control team.
These will be carried out by City Building (Glasgow) LLP and are expected to be completed by the end of August.
A Glasgow Life spokesperson said: “We have great news about Drumchapel Pool. Since the discovery of RAAC at the pool, Glasgow Life has been working on fixing it.
“The problem here is smaller than at other places, so the repairs will be easier and quicker. Our plans are now with the building control team and we’re waiting for their approval.
“We expect City Building (Glasgow) LLP will start the work in early June and finish by the end of August.
“After that, we will reopen the pool as soon as possible. Thank you for being patient. We can’t wait to see you back at the pool soon.”
Further updates will be provided via Glasgow Life’s website and social media channels.
