Residents are being urged to stay inside amid a fire at a derelict building.

Gartsherrie Road in Coatbridge is closed at Frederick Street and Blair Road due to the blaze, which is understood to have taken over a former primary school on the evening of Sunday, June 10. 

Police Scotland says there are no reports of any injuries, but they are advising people who live in the area to keep windows and doors closed and stay indoors while firefighters work to extinguish the fire.

A spokesperson said: "Gartsherrie Road in Coatbridge is closed at Frederick Street and Blair Road due to an ongoing fire at a derelict building. There are no reports of any injuries. As a precaution, we are advising local residents to remain indoors and keep their windows and doors closed."

 

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.45pm on Sunday, June 8 to reports of a fire in a derelict building on Gartsherrie Road, Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances and a high reach appliance to the scene.

“There are no reported casualties at this time.

“Crews remain in attendance.”

Local MSP Fulton Macgregor shared a shocking image of the devastation, as flames can be seen enveloping the brickwork and breaking through some of the boarded-up windows.

He shared his sadness at the demise of a building that would hold memories for those who attended the school when it was operational. 

He said on Sunday: "As many will be aware the old Gartsherrie Primary School is on fire tonight and the roof has now totally collapsed. My thanks to the fire and rescue service and all other emergency services at the scene.

"I know how much this building means to those local to the area as well as wider Coatbridge. I’ll make some enquiries with the council and police tomorrow to try and ascertain what has happened and next steps.

"Sad night especially for those with memories of attending school there."
