After a year of hard work, dance students from West College Scotland's Paisley campus showed off their skills during a showcase.

The year-end display, Dance Fusion, took place earlier this month at the Beacon Arts Centre and featured a range of dance genres such as jazz and contemporary.

The performances were set to music by artists like Beyoncé and included narrative-rich pieces inspired by scenes from Hercules and Moulin Rouge.

HND students Daniel Taylor, from Renfrew, and Ashton McKernan, said their favourite piece was Class of 84, a blend of commercial and contemporary dance choreographed by fellow HND student Cara Hutchinson.

It tells the story of the working class in 1984 with Ashton also performing a contemporary solo piece, Stuck, which she choreographed for her graded unit.

Ashton, from Glasgow, said: "Performing on your own is a bit scary, but I’ve done it a few times now so I’m getting used to it.

“It’s been the best two years of my life. Getting to do what you love and want to do every day is a privilege.”

Some dancers, like Megan Cush, a HNC student from East Kilbride, enjoyed the Moulin Rouge piece.

Megan said: “As more of a hip hop dancer, it’s a totally different style for me and has helped me to improve on my jazz."

Beth Campbell, a fellow HNC student, performed her solo piece Coffins which she choreographed to a Gaelic poem.

Hailing from a Gaelic-speaking family in Skye, Beth said: “I was shocked but really chuffed to be asked to perform my piece at the show, especially as there are so many talented dancers who all deserve it.

"I’m very grateful and glad to see Gaelic get that platform.”

For the NC students, this marked their first showcase, with Hercules being their favourite due to its upbeat and comedic elements.

Gillian Desjacques, curriculum quality leader, said: “I know, like me, the students are incredibly grateful to the staff behind the scenes who, year after year, work above and beyond to ensure the highest quality learning experience is received.

"I’d like to thank the students themselves. They are the heart of our experience and never cease to surprise, inspire, innovate, and excite.

"The show was a huge success, and we are immensely proud of each and every one of them and look forward to following their journeys as they embark on what we know will be a successful future in the creative industries.”
