The extent of the destruction is unclear at this stage but Glasgow City Council officials confirmed there is a lot of “smoke and water damage”.

One upset resident said: “It is so devastating that the centre has been vandalised, we are all upset because it is used so much.

“It means a lot to the people who live here and is a great community space, so I have no idea why someone would do this.”

A second angry resident added: “It is shameful that the hub has been attacked like this.

"It is a lifeline for a lot of us and someone has wrecked it for no reason. I hope it can open soon so we can enjoy it again.”

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: “It’s shocking the Maryhill Community Hub has been targeted in this way.

“This is a well-used facility that’s right at the heart of the local community and it’s unbelievable that anyone would set-out to vandalise the building like they have done.

“We’re still trying to understand the full impact of the vandalism but it’s already clear there’s been a lot of smoke and water damage to the building.

“The Hub will have to remain closed while we assess the extent of damage, clear-up the mess the culprits have left behind and ensure the building is safe to use again.

“We are very sorry, but this means a number of community events, including family parties, will not be able to go ahead as planned for the time being.

“We are writing to everyone with a let or a lease within the building to inform them of the situation and we will keep people updated of any developments.

“Anyone who has any information on those responsible for this senseless vandalism should contact the police.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.22pm on Sunday, June 23 to reports of a building fire on Glenfinnan Drive, Maryhill, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene and firefighters extinguished a fire on the ground floor of a community centre.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
