PLAY equipment at a Glasgow nursery was left covered in shards of glass after ‘despicable’ vandals struck at the facility for a second time in less than two weeks.

Three windows at the Willow Room, an indoor play space at Knightswood Early Years Centre, were shattered on Wednesday, July 3.

Officers were alerted to the incident by a ‘vigilant’ member of the local community who watched as the antics unfolded.

Pictures show traffic cones and a large plank of wood lying near the windows and on the floor whilst glass covers toys and the carpet.

Councillor Christina Cannon, city convenor for education and early years, branded the vandal’s behaviour as “disgusting”.

Councillor Cannon said: “This is disgusting behaviour and comes less than two weeks after the outdoor area of the nursery was targeted by mindless vandals.

“Thankfully, a vigilant member of the local community witnessed the antics of these despicable people and contacted the police who we think interrupted what was going on – who knows what the damage could have been.

“Police are appealing for any witnesses or if someone has any information of the culprits who have such a blatant disregard for the nursery and the children’s resources.

“The room is used by staff and the wee ones during bad weather and now the smashed windows will need to be replaced and the equipment inside is covered in shards of glass.

“The children are the ones who will miss out, but I doubt the vandals will even care.”

Cops confirmed they are investigating the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson: "Around 9.10pm on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, we received a report of vandalism at a premises on Great Western Road, Glasgow.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

The latest act of vandalism comes less than two weeks after we reported that cruel vandals had broken into the early years centre’s playground and trashed a wooden hut used by nursery children in a separate incident.

Staff turning up to work at the Great Western Road facility – which is located within the same building as St Ninian’s Primary School – on June 24 found the ‘cosy cabin’ had, had its window removed, paint thrown over it, letters burned into the wall, and the door burst open.

The ‘cosy cabin’ was bought for the nursery children using money raised by parents and the local community.

The team at the early years centre said that vandalism is an issue that they have reportedly been dealing with since last summer.

Liz Rowan, head of YEC, previously said:  “We’ve been here fourteen years and we’ve been really fortunate.

"It was only last year that it really started and the school had a lot of damage done to its outdoor classroom as well.

“There was an incident where it was a group of youths [who broke in]. It was neighbours that had spotted them and the police came down and managed to stop them from coming into the garden but on Monday night it happened again.

“I’ve asked parents to keep a close eye throughout the summer because I think this could be it starting back up again with the holidays coming up.

“It’s just so disheartening.”

It is understood that a local company has since offered to fix the ‘cosy hut’ by replacing the door and windows free of charge.
