A GLASGOW sci-fi conference boss has not replied to multiple message requests to host a panel from the world-famous author George RR Martin at this summer's event.

The Game of Thrones author has expressed his frustration after spending months sending multiple messages in an attempt to attend the World Science Fiction Convention which have been ignored by the organisers.

Martin had asked back in January if he could attend the conference, which would be his first “in a number of years”, and was sent a sign-up link from the event bosses and has had no reply since.

He has subsequently spent the last few months pitching panel and programme ideas, one of which was a panel dedicated to the American sci-fi author Howard Waldrop who died earlier this year, but has still yet to receive any reply.

On his blog, Martin explained he is not on any of the programming and is unsure if he will be delivering any talks or panel shows but not due to a “lack of trying”.

The World Science Fiction Convention is hosted in a different country every year and is due to be held at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow on August 8 this summer.

Thousands of sci-fi enthusiasts flock to the global convention every year as it offers panels and shows dedicated to fans' favourite shows.

The famous author explained he had even tried to get a phone number from the event organisers to help clear up the confusion and discuss the potential of hosting a show.  

On his blog, Martin said: “I will be in Glasgow, attending the con, but whether you’ll see me, I don’t know. I am not on any programming. It is not for lack of trying, though.

“I wrote the con’s programming chair back in January, and again in February, asking for his phone number so we could discuss the details.

“No phone number was forthcoming, alas, just a form letter with a link to an application and a warning that while I was welcome to apply, I could not be guaranteed a place on the programme.”

The author (below) went on to explain he has been in touch several more times, trying to organise different events at the conference, but has had no further reply since they sent him an application.

He added: “So … yes, I will be at Glasgow. I will check out the art show, as I always do, maybe attend some bid parties, and I will be wandering the dealer’s room (the huckster’s room, as us old timers call it).

“The rest of the time I guess I may hang out in the bar, drinking with friends both old and new, toasting Howard and Gardner and all the other friends we lost.

“Maybe I’ll see you there.”

A spokesperson for the World Science Fiction Convention said: "Our programme team is still busily working away to map various participants to potential programme items. This is a lengthy and complex process.

"Therefore we are unable to comment on individual participation. The full programme will be released in late July."
