War Horse is based on Michael Morpurgo’s beloved novel and has gained international acclaim.
The drama, set against the backdrop of the First World War, tells the powerful story of a young boy Albert, and his horse Joey.
The play has won more than 25 major awards and has been seen by at least 8.3 million people worldwide.
It's renowned for its ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company.
The puppetry brings breathing, galloping, charging horses to life on stage and has inspired a generation of theatre-makers since its premiere in 2007.
The story traces the extraordinary journey of Joey, who is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France at the outbreak of the First World War.
Caught up in enemy fire, Joey serves on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land.
Meanwhile, Albert embarks on a treacherous mission to find Joey and bring him home, despite not being old enough to enlist.
Adapted by Nick Stafford, the play was originally directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris.
The upcoming tour is being co-produced with Michael Harrison, Fiery Angel, and Playing Field.
This tour is notable as it marks 110 years since the start of the First World War and the 40th anniversary of the publication of Morpurgo’s popular novel.
Tom Morris has spearheaded the creative development for the tour, with revival director Katie Henry aiding in the process.
The production will feature reimagined designs by Rae Smith and additional music by Adrian Sutton.
Assisted performances are available throughout the run at each venue on the tour.
War Horse received its world premiere on October 9, 2007, at the National Theatre.
It has been performed in 97 cities in 14 countries, with productions on Broadway, in Toronto and Berlin, as well as touring productions in the UK, Ireland, North America, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
Although it was first published in 1982, Morpurgo’s novel remains a global best-seller, with more than 35 million copies in circulation worldwide in 37 different languages.
Charles Stanley, the National Theatre’s partner for financial wellbeing, is supporting War Horse on tour.
