A MAN who drove at speeds in excess of 100mph on a busy motorway has been banned from driving.

Lee Jackson, 25, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing on July 10 after pleading guilty to two charges of dangerous driving.

The court heard that at around 1pm on July 27, 2023, police saw a black BMW join the M77 – which has a speed limit of 50mph – from the slip road at Seaward Street undertaking another vehicle.

Officers said it was clear the BMW was over the speed limit.

Police attempted to catch up with the vehicle but failed to match its speed, with the police speedometer reading 100mph.

The BMW switched lanes and drove close to another vehicle before braking harshly.

Police said it was clear that if the person in the vehicle in front were to brake there would be a collision.

The accelerating then braking harshly is said to have continued for a period of time.

The vehicle was also seen performing a slalom manoeuvre undertaking and overtaking other vehicles.

It was eventually stopped by police on Barrhead Road where Jackson was confirmed as the driver.

He was offered a fixed penalty and was later reported to the court.

In a separate incident at around 5.30pm on October 1, 2023, officers saw a black BMW on Hillhead Road in Kirkintilloch.

Police had cause to stop the vehicle and when the car pulled over, cops saw Jackson in the driver’s seat with the engine running. There was no one else in the car.

Jackson rolled down his window and was asked to provide his licence. He was described as being visibly nervous about the interaction.

He was told he was being detained and he suddenly grabbed the open driver’s door and accelerated away at speed narrowly missing the police officers who were standing in the road.

Jackson sped away towards Bishopbriggs. His vehicle was eventually lost in sight.

Jackson, of Mansfield in England, was subject to appear in court over this.

His lawyer told the court that his client was “here to accept his fate”.

Sheriff Simone Sweeney disqualified Jackson from driving for 16 months.

He was also tagged for 81 days keeping him indoors between 7.30pm and 7am.
