A car proud resident has shared his disbelief after his car was “keyed” in the car park of a major supermarket in Barrhead.
Peter Mackin said he was helping his friend who is blind with his shopping when the "soul-destroying" incident took place in Asda’s car park.
The retired carer told the Glasgow Times: “We went in and we got a small shop and when I took my friend back up the road, I saw the car had been keyed.
“I’d just cleaned the car that day, so I knew right away where it happened.”
The 67-year-old went back down to Asda and asked one of the store’s security staff members if he could view the store’s surveillance footage.
“He was a lovely guy and he looked at the CCTV and caught me coming in at 1.23pm and literally 30, 40 seconds later we saw an adult male and he put something from his right hand to his left hand and keyed the car,” explained Peter, who is from Neilston.
“There is not really much you can do about it, but it’s sickening that there are these type of people.
“If it was kids it would be bad enough.
“The man obviously saw us coming out the car and that my friend is disabled and still thought it was appropriate to damage the car.”
Peter has since had the repair of the eight-inch scratch on the driver’s door of his Mazda MX-5 priced and been told it will cost £500 to £600.
“I’ve kind of got over it now and I’ve tried to fix it up as much as I can because there is no way I’m going to get it repaired but to actually see it happening was astonishing,” he added.
“It’s not even the cost, it’s just the fact I’m so disappointed because when you see the length of time I was out the car then he had to see us and that I was assisting a disabled person.
“It’s very concerning that someone local could carry out this wanton damage.
“My friend was feeling terrible as if it was his fault, but it’s nothing to do with him.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed they had received a report of the incident.
"Around Sunday, July 14, 2024, we received a report of a car damaged in the Church Road area of Barrhead,” they said.
“Enquiries are continuing."
