Another 500 cycle storage units are to be installed on streets across Glasgow.

The council has a budget of £2.5million for hundreds more secure bike shelters to enable and encourage more people in tenement flats to cycle.

A pilot scheme in 2021 saw 200 units put in place in three phases in areas with a high number of tenement properties.

The council said there has been a 96% take-up rate and a waiting list of almost 3000 people.

Glasgow City Council decided to invest £1.5m for more spaces and later agreed to increase it to £2.5m.

The new shelters will be able to hold at least six bikes and capable of holding newer types including E-bikes and larger mountain bikes.

In a report to councillors, Mairi Miller, director of Legal and administration, said: “The issue of residential cycle parking is a problem for the council where there is a sizable proportion of older tenement properties and a limited space available for cycle storage.”

Councillors are being asked to approve awarding the contract to Cyclehoop Ltd for a duration of five years with the option to extend for two periods of up to 12 months.

It will provide 120 shelters a year for the first three years with the rest delivered in the final two years.

Ms Miller added: “Further units may be required and installed subject to demand and available budget.

"This scheme will be developed in subsequent contract years in line with unit cost, demand, and available budget.”

Ten firms responded to the tender notice and three submitted a bid.

The winning bid of almost £1.5m is to supply, install, manage and maintain the secure cycle storage units.

Ms Miller said because the budget is £2.5m “further units could be installed subject to demand”.

The report said the plan supports a number of council ambitions including: Fight the climate emergency in a just transition to a net zero Glasgow Mission; Deliver sustainable transport and travel aligned with the city region Commitment; and Increase affordable cycle storage across the city.
