A dad was brought back from “death's door” after his partner begged doctors not to remove his life support.

Sandy Smith, from Bridge of Weir, was critically unwell last year after catching covid leaving medics at the Royal Alexandra Hospital believing there was nothing else they could do.

The 72-year-old was just about to have his breathing tubes removed in July before his partner Jayne Taylor, also 72, pleaded that he was a “warrior” who would “fight”.

Miraculously Sandy shocked doctors by then somehow making a sudden u-turn and pulling through to make a full recovery.

Sandy said: “I lay in a hospital bed fighting for my life, I was as close to death's door as you could be.

“I had hoses of all descriptions down my throat and my nose into my lungs pumping oxygen into me.

“At one point the doctors were going to remove my oxygen and let me pass over to meet my maker but my beautiful companion and love of my life was having none of this, so she met with my doctor and pleaded with him to save me.

"She told them I was a warrior who would fight.

“Through this here I am today still alive and loving life, I also will never be able to thank the doctors and nurses enough.”

We previously reported how Sandy and Jayne were both raped as youngsters at the hands of staff at Quarriers Homes.

The pair campaigned tirelessly to see 'lost' gravestones restored to mark the final resting place of 335 children who died at the orphanage.

Now Sandy is using his second chance at life to remember the youngsters who are buried at Nittingshill Cemetery.

His dream is to have enough people attend his memorial service to stand at each grave to honour the youngsters.

He said: “I was brought back from death because I need to carry out my dream of having 155 people attend my memorial service for these kids.

“Me and Jayne met at Quarriers and at 14 had plans of having a family and lots of kids, but it wasn’t to be as we lost touch for years.

“We reconnected later in life and now we see these little angels as our own children, we will fight tooth and nail to remember these victims.

“This September we hope we can finally have enough people attend to stand at each gravestone, some have several children buried there, to guard them and protect them.

“I have dedicated my life to it, I think that is why I was given a second chance.”
