PLANS have been approved for the "substantial demolition" of a B-listed former school in the city's East End.

The planning application for Golfhill Public School and Janitor's House on Circus Drive has been approved by Glasgow City Council to allow the site to be developed into 18 flats.

The façade of the school will be retained and the school building will be extended.

There will also be internal and external alterations to the former janitor's house and alterations to the boundary treatments.

Permission has been granted for the substantial work on the condition that prior to the work beginning "a detailed phasing plan for the development shall be submitted to and approved in writing by the planning authority".

The planning decision notice continued: "For the avoidance of doubt, the required works to take down, rebuild, repair and retain the Listed Building's façade shall form the first phase of works on site.

"Prior to the commencement of works, an amended methodology specifying how the Listed Building's façade shall be taken down, rebuilt, repaired and retained shall be submitted to and approved in writing by the Planning Authority."

No demolition of the building can occur until contracts are in place for the redevelopment of the site in accordance with the planning permission.

We previously reported that more than 130 homes are set to be built in Dennistoun after plans to develop the Golfhill School site were approved.

Consent to knock down part of the B-listed school building, on Circus Drive, and build 18 homes was initially granted in 2019.

The developer secured permission for more of the project in 2022 with 133 flats to be delivered in total.

Golfhill School, designed by architect Alexander Nisbet Paterson, was originally opened in 1902 for the Glasgow School Board and has been on the ‘buildings at risk’ register since 2010.

The council’s executive committee approved the sale of Golfhill School and the janitor’s house in September 2016 to Spectrum Properties from the council for £550,000.

They said the sale would allow the safeguarding of the B-listed façade.
