Prior approval has been granted by East Renfrewshire Council to form a new and higher overbridge across a train line in the area.

The works at Westerton Lane in Busby are part of a railway (overhead line equipment) upgrade programme which extends from Glasgow Central to Barrhead and East Kilbride.

The proposed works entail the replacement of the existing overbridge which is of an older, stone parapet and arched design.

Currently there is insufficient clearance under the bridge for the necessary OLE infrastructure.

The new bridge will be a modern structure formed with pre-fabricated concrete sections and will provide adequate clearance.

The works are permitted development and are granted subject to the prior approval of the planning authority.

Prior approval was granted as “the proposal cannot be located elsewhere and its external appearance will not injure the amenity of the neighbourhood.”

The application was submitted on Wednesday, July 24 and the decision was issued on Sunday, August 20.

The council’s report of handling stated: “The bridge in itself is necessary and cannot be constructed elsewhere.”

“The modern design is functional and efficient,” the report added.

“Its character will be defined in the main by its parapets which will be formed with smooth concrete sections.

“It has less aesthetic appeal than the existing bridge however it is considered satisfactory.

“Noting the above it is considered that the proposed works are acceptable and that prior approval is acceptable.”
