Plans have been submitted for the premises of a convenience store which closed two years ago amid claims a major Scottish Water project “killed” the business.

As we reported in October 2022, the Giffnock community was left shocked when Frankie’s on Braidholm Road shut after serving customers for 50 years.

The plans validated by East Renfrewshire Council this month, outline a proposal to sub-divide and part change the use of the existing commercial unit from a Class 1A to a Class 3 unit.

A class 3 unit is one which is used for the sale of food or drink for consumption on the premises.

Plans accompanying the application, show tables and chairs in one half of the premises.

The application is currently awaiting decision by the planning department.

In October 2022, Ian McNeill, Frankie’s owner, said he had been forced to close after he lost the majority of his passing trade due to Scottish Water works and the resulting road closed signs and four-way traffic light system outside his premises.

Speaking out at the time, he said: "I don’t have a choice.

"The business isn’t viable anymore, it’s now losing money.

"I’m haemorrhaging money and I can’t stem the losses, so I’ve got to close the business."

Responding to the closure of Frankie's, at the time Scottish Water said: "We appreciate that there is inconvenience caused by these essential works to help reduce the risk of repeated internal sewer flooding for local householders although that will be far outweighed by the long-term benefits to the wider community.

"We will continue to work with local residents and business owners to help minimise any disruption for the duration of this major investment project."
