A vacant former café near Glasgow is set to become the latest location of a much-loved Japanese restaurant business.
The owners of Okome took over the lease at 118 Drymen Road in Bearsden last week and hope to open up their new sushi bar in the space in two to three months’ time.
The unit, which will be fully refurbished, is the former site of Nonna’s Deli and Caffe which closed its doors in March.
Prior to this it was home to RS McColl for many years.
Okome serves up authentic Japanese cuisine and has six other premises, including ones in Byres Road, Shawlands, Clarkston, Paisley, Bathgate and Galashiels.
A spokesperson for Okome said: “It’s a nice location and we will do similar things to the other Okomes.
“It’s not going to be a posh restaurant, it’s more going to be a customer friendly and welcoming environment and more casual.
“It will be more like a sushi bar - a takeaway with seating.
“Refurbishment wise, there is going to be a very strong Japanese/Asian atmosphere, so it will be something different to the premises already there.
“There is nothing like it in the area and we wanted to bring something new to the community.”
It is planned that the menu at Okome Bearsden will be very similar to the chain's Bathgate restaurant which specialises in a delicious array of healthy rice bowls, ramen, sushi and more.
Some Japanese soft drinks, snacks and sweets will also be on offer.
At present cooking in the premises is limited to equipment that does not require an extraction system.
Okome have submitted a planning application for the installation of a carbon filtration extraction system for cooking in order to provide a more expansive menu.
The planning application for this was validated on Wednesday, August 14 by East Dunbartonshire Council and is currently awaiting decision.
It is believed the venture will create around ten jobs.
