FAMILIES are considering moving house over concerns about the lack of local of schools.

Alana Muir, who lives in Robroyston, says despite "more and more houses getting built" in the area, families are only in the catchment of one primary and one secondary school.

Alana, whose son currently attends Wallacewell Primary School, says the school had its capacity increased, with some portacabins having been added to the grounds and the building being reconfigured.

She said: "The capacity has been nearly doubled - that school is not built for that capacity.

"It’s a great wee school, it’s in good condition, and the teachers are amazing but they know how we’re stressing about it.

"It’s the same with the high school, this areas in the catchment for Smithycroft and that’s now nearing capacity."

However, a spokesperson for Glasgow City Council says the schools are not at capacity and anyone within the catchment area will be entitled to a place Smithycroft.

The Glasgow Times reported in August last year a petition was launched calling for a secondary school to be built in Robroyston as Smithycroft Secondary, located in Riddrie, is too far away and "bursting at the seams".

However, a year on, parents say they are no further on in their battle, with many saying they are considering leaving the area due to a lack of schools and other essential amenities to cope with the growing population, including GP surgeries and dentists.

Alana, who has lived in Robroyston since she was five years old, said: "I love Robroyston, it’s a lovely place to stay but the more houses they’re building, I’m at the verge of looking for a home somewhere else.

"We encourage houses getting built but they don’t have anything for these houses.

"If they’re wanting to build another 300 homes, where are all these kids going? It’s very stressful.

"There’s only shops and an ASDA – that's all we have here."

Alana, 39, also says when she was growing up it was possible for people to go to nearby schools in East Dunbartonshire, with her attending Bishopbriggs High School, but that is no longer the case.

It comes as we recently reported property developers Taylor Wimpey West Scotland and Caledonian Properties have submitted a joint application for an Approval of Matters Specified in Conditions to the council for the creating of 300 new homes located off Robroyston Road.

Planning Permission in Principal has already been secured for the new development – named Lumloch View – which would include a variety of two-, three-, four- and five-bedroom homes.

Councillor Thomas Rannachan, who has been supporting local families in their fight for new schools, says he supports much needed houses being built in the area but is concerned about the lack of facilities.

He said: "Wallacewell is at bursting point, it doesn’t matter what the actual figures say, there is nowhere to put kids in there.

"I’ve spoken to lots of constituents who are telling us they're moving away or they're considering it.

"There’s nothing there – doctors, dentists, schools are a major issue.

"I’m having to continually ask what the council are doing to service the people of Robroyston.

"They need more places at nursery, primary and secondary.

"The pressure it’s putting on parents is unbelievable."

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: "Officers in education will liaise with officers in other services over future school capacities and school roll projections and considering developments in wards.

"These will also be continually under review."
