A weather warning has been issued as thunderstorms are expected to batter central Scotland.

Heavy rain and lightning strikes are expected throughout the night and all day tomorrow around Coatbridge and Larkhall.

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning and have predicted possible flooding and power cuts.

ScotRail has also issued alerts and revealed train speed limits may cause delays for safety reasons on any route.

Network Rail confirmed they held an “extreme weather meeting” to prepare for tomorrow as they expect “up to 25mm of rain in the worst affected areas.”

The Met Office confirmed: “Whilst many places will miss them, thunderstorms may cause flooding and disruption in places on Monday.

“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

“Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, with a small chance that some communities could be temporarily cut off by flooded roads.

“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.”

ScotRail posted on social media: “Journey times may be extended tomorrow on some services should Network Rail introduce train speed limits for safety reasons on any of our routes.

“There are no plans for speed restrictions as of now but they'll be monitoring the weather front closely.”

NetworkRail said: “Earlier today, we held an extreme weather meeting with our weather specialist, maintenance teams, and train operators to discuss the heavy rain forecast for tonight and tomorrow, particularly in central and eastern Scotland.

“We could see up to 25mm of rain in the worst affected areas – falling mostly in short bursts, and there’s a risk of lightning. The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning too.

“Our preparations are underway. Today we’re checking areas prone to flooding and the pumps across the country to make sure they’re ready.

“Signalling teams are making sure spares are loaded into our response vehicles, in case lightning strikes any of our equipment.”

“Our meteorologists, based in the railway control room, will be monitoring the weather in real-time, and as always, we’ll keep you updated if anything changes.”

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency stated: “From mid afternoon on Sunday and throughout Monday significant surface water flooding impacts are possible in central and eastern Scotland due to heavy showers with the risk of thunder.

“The likelihood is very low due to very low levels of confidence associated with locations and totals of heaviest rain.”
