BY-ELECTIONS will take place after two Glasgow councillors have resigned their seats.

Patricia Ferguson and Maureen Burke were elected as Labour MPs for Glasgow West and Glasgow North East respectively at the General Election in July.

They have now officially given up their posts as Glasgow councillors.

It means elections will now take place in Drumchapel Anniesland for Ferguson’s seat and North East for Burke’s post.

Labour confirmed the two Members of Parliament have written to the Chief Executive of Glasgow City Council Suzanne Millar informing her that they were resigning from their council seats.

The Labour Group in Glasgow said both councillors relinquished their city council salaries immediately after their election but were still carrying out duties until this morning.

George Redmond, Glasgow Labour Group Leader, said: “While I am disappointed to lose two experienced councillors from our group, it is for a great reason and I wish them both the very best at Westminster.

“The Labour group are delighted for their former colleagues but we will miss them.

“I look forward to campaigning in the upcoming by-elections for their replacements.”
