A man drove the wrong way around a roundabout before speeding onto a Glasgow motorway with black smoke coming from his car.

Louis Wardrop, from Cranhill, was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court recently after pleading guilty to dangerous driving.

The court heard that the 24-year-old had been driving south on Easterhouse Road in Baillieston at around 9.15pm on July 7, 2024.

At this time, police were travelling behind Wardrop and he indicated right to turn onto Springcroft Road.

As Wardrop’s vehicle went to turn onto Springcroft Road, it reached the roundabout on Easterhouse Road and doubled back on itself, travelling in the direction it came from.

Wardrop then approached the roundabout on Springhill Parkway and went around it the wrong way. He was on the wrong side of the road for some time.

Wardrop entered the slip road at junction nine of the M8 motorway and accelerated harshly.

Police were travelling at 45 miles per hour to keep up with him. At this time, black smoke was coming from the back of Wardrop’s car.

Wardrop’s car then suffered an unknown mechanical problem as it joined the motorway.

Once on the M8 officers drove at excessive speeds but failed to keep up with Wardrop.

As he reached junction 11 Wardrop came to a stop on the hard shoulder and was arrested by officers.

He was cautioned and charged, and made no reply.

Wardrop’s lawyer told the court there was no excuse for her client’s behaviour.

The defence solicitor said: “Whilst it has not made the complaint he had £20 worth of cannabis on him.

"There wasn’t much traffic on the road but there’s no excuse for this behaviour.”

Addressing Wardrop, Sheriff Allan McKay said: “You’re a peculiar mix of stupid and relatively responsible.

"Your good judgement had clearly disappeared. You bottled it when you saw police because you had the cannabis on you.

"I would encourage you to avoid any form of offending."

Sheriff McKay disqualified Wardrop from driving for 12 months and put him on a community payback order with 12 months of social work supervision.

Wardrop was also tagged for 100 days keeping him indoors between 9pm and 6am.
