ASK Andrew Agnew to name his favourite Glasgow band and he instantly rhymes off a list.

“Deacon Blue is a big favourite of mine, I’ve always loved their sound - Texas are superb, I definitely love Annie Lennox, Jimmy Somerville, Michelle McManus….” he says.

“But Wet Wet Wet were my childhood. I knew almost every word.”

He adds: “There is so much wonderful musical talent in Scotland, we are so lucky to have all of them.”

Former Balamory star (he played community cop PC Plum in the CBeebies hit) Andrew is living the dream on stage in Glasgow later this month.

So excited was he by the thought of Glasgow Kiss, a new musical from David Carswell, writer of The Tommy Burns Story, that he sent the team a self-tape when he spotted adverts for the show on social media.

“When I saw the list of Glasgow bands that were to be included, I called my agent and asked If they could get me seen for the show,” he says.

“I knew it was going to be something special.”

Andrew was promptly cast as Tony, who is “in the entertainment industry”, he says, mysteriously. “That’s all I’m willing to say – I play Tony and his alter ego, and I get to be involved in some great songs.”

Glasgow Kiss follows James (Stephen Arden) as he returns to the city after a 20-year absence, for a funeral.

Reuniting with the friends he hung out with at the famous Barrowland, the show celebrates the rich musical culture of the venue which was the soundtrack to their youth, first loves and friendships.

The soundtrack includes hits by Simple Minds, Primal Scream, Texas, Frankie Miller, Gun and many more, and the cast also includes Lorraine Graham, Ellen Jackson, James McAnerney, and Valissa Scott.

“The story grows in lots of directions and includes many colourful Glasgow characters that, with this great script, will keep you laughing, dancing and even shedding a wee tear,” says Andrew.

“The way all these familiar songs by major Glasgow bands are interspersed into the story is exciting.”

He is also looking forward to being on stage in one of his favourite Glasgow theatres.

“The Pavilion audiences are second to none,” says Andrew.

“I’ve been many times as an audience member, ever since I was young. I loved visiting the pantomimes and the variety shows featuring some Scottish legends.

“To play on the same stage as many of the greats is always a huge thrill.”

Glasgow Kiss runs from September 30 to October 5 at the Pavilion Theatre.
