A pensioner repeatedly battered a man with his walking stick after an argument broke out between the pair.
William Scotland, 70, of Pollok, was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to assaulting Charles Spence.
The court heard that Spence, 65, had been outside the Hazelwood Bar in Nitshill having a cigarette at around 7pm on July 5, 2023, when he got into a argument with Scotland.
Scotland then stated “I’m going to do you in” and grabbed Spence, throwing him to the ground.
Spence managed to get to his feet but was pushed to the ground again.
Scotland then hit Spence on the head with his walking stick, with it breaking over his head, and he continued to attack him.

Spence got to his feet again and Scotland attempted to hit him to the side several times.
Spence was pushed to the ground again where he was again hit with the other half of Scotland’s stick.
At this time a member of the public ran into the bar to alert police.
Officers attended and cautioned and charged Scotland to which he replied “I did hit him over the head with my walking stick.
“The other guy was very drunk. He drinks every day in that pub and then he drives his car the next day.”
Scotland was taken to a police station and later released.

The procurator fiscal depute added that Spence had gone to the hospital and suffered lacerations to his face and bruising. He was told by doctors that his injuries would be allowed to heal themselves.
Addressing Scotland’s lawyer, Sheriff Patricia Pryce said: “Why did he do this? If he thought someone was drink driving why not tell police?
“Why batter him with a stick?”
The defence solicitor replied: “There was a previous altercation where Mr Scotland was attacked.
"He is 70 years old and has no previous convictions.”
Addressing Scotland, Sheriff Pryce stated: “This is your first offence and it is a bad offence. You repeatedly hit a 65-year-old man with your walking stick to his injury.”
Sheriff Pryce tagged Scotland for 13 and a half weeks keeping him indoors between 7pm and 7am.
