A CRIMINAL justice student hurled homophobic remarks at bouncers after he was refused entry to a gay nightclub.

Tyler Celland, 21, made the vile comments outside Glasgow city centre's AXM on March 15, 2024.

Celland tried to enter the venue to retrieve his friend's phone but was stopped from going in.

The University of the West of Scotland student then shouted "faggot" and "p**f" before he was restrained on the ground.

Clelland, of the city's Castlemilk, was not arrested until later on when the bouncers pointed him out to police while he was in a taxi.

The first offender pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner which was aggravated by prejudice relating to sexual orientation.

The court heard that Clelland approached the two door stewards when he was heavily intoxicated at 10pm.

Prosecutor Jennifer Sillars said: "Clelland was looking for friends who were inside but he was refused entry.

"Despite being informed of this, he tried to gain entry and was told to move away from the premises.

"Clelland became aggressive, getting in the face of a door steward and told him to f*** off."

Clelland began to walk away from the nightclub before he shouted the homophobic remarks.

Celland was restrained to the ground before being brought to his feet.

He initially left but was pointed out by the stewards to police officers around 1.40am.

Thomas Ferguson, defending, told the court that his client believed the bouncers were being "condescending" towards him.

He added: "He knows the language used was deplorable and he is remorseful."

Sheriff Simone Sweeney told Clelland that the offence was "out of character" and admonished him.
