PLANS have been submitted to turn an A-listed building in North Glasgow into student accommodation.

The proposals for Flemington House, on Flemington Street in Springburn, would see the former North British Locomotive Company offices redeveloped to "ensure the viable and sustainable long-term future use of the Category-A listed building".

The plans, submitted to Glasgow City Council, state the developers would alter the existing building to create 410-bedroom student accommodation, with proposed work including constructing a four-storey 88-bedroom annexe to the west, demolishing 1960s extensions, restoring historical features and creating a new courtyard café.

There would be a mixture of self-catering rooms with integral kitchens and shower rooms and cluster rooms with shared kitchens and sitting rooms.

There would also amenities including laundry rooms, common rooms, a cycle store, cinema, gym, games room, Mahjong room, library, and media room for residents.

The design and access statement says public access would be available to the café, central courtyard and west garden area from 9am to 5pm.

Public access would also be made available for the Marble Hall, commemorative plaques, war memorials and first-floor boardroom on application to the building manager.

The heritage statement says continuing office use of the building is no longer viable due to occupancy decreasing while rents and other costs have increased.

Flemington House, built in 1908, was converted into a technical college after it was taken over by Stow College (now Glasgow Kelvin College) in 1961 before being sold in 2006 for use as a business centre.

The building was requisitioned in 1914 for use by the British Red Cross Society Scottish Region during the First World War as Springburn Hospital.
