A man who went into a hair salon with a carrier bag over his head and demanded money later told police “I was having a laugh”.

Gerard McCahill, 54, of Lennoxtown, was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

The court heard that McCahill was seen on CCTV outside of Glam and Glossy on Main Street in Lennoxtown going through bins at around 8.10pm on February 23, 2023.

He was seen to put a carrier bag over his head before tripping through the shop door and falling into a sign.

McCahill then got up with the carrier bag still over his face. He was in possession of a silver pole – which was a selfie stick.

He took the bag off of his head and stated “did I give you a wee fright? I need £200”.

Staff told McCahill that they only took card payments and there was no cash in the store.

He then left the store.

A staff member phoned a woman who lived above the salon to tell her about what had happened.

They pointed out McCahill to her and the incident was reported to police.

McCahill was traced at his home address where he was arrested, cautioned and charged and replied “I was having a laugh”.

His lawyer described the offence as “sufficiently menacing”.

The defence solicitor said: “It wouldn’t have been a laugh for those individuals. It’s almost as shambolic as it is chaotic.

“It is sufficiently menacing in its nature.”

Addressing McCahill, Sheriff Anna Reid said: “It must have been frightening for those involved.”

Sheriff Reid tagged McCahill for nine weeks keeping him indoors from 10pm to 8am.
