A man was seriously injured after being offered a lift by his friend who then crashed head-on with a car.

Kyle McKay, 20, of Sandyhills, was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to four charges.

He admitted to carrying pillion passengers on a motorcycle whilst being a provisional licence holder and not displaying L plates, driving without insurance, and causing serious injury to Samuel Ntsiful Adu by driving without due care and attention.

The court heard that McKay and two of his friends – including Mr Adu – were leaving the Gorbals Leisure Centre just before midday on February 27, 2023.

McKay had a moped with him and offered to give his friends a lift.

He got in the rider’s seat while his friends got on the back.

They then left the leisure centre and travelled on Ballater Street in the direction of Glasgow Green.

A few minutes later McKay went through the junction onto James Street where the car in front of him slowed down for a pothole.

McKay tried to overtake this vehicle but collided with a car causing him to lose control of the moped and crash head-on with a stationary car.

The collision caused both passengers to fall from the moped.

McKay and one of his friends got to their feet and left James Street, leaving an injured Mr Adu.

He had a 10cm laceration to his right knee which was bleeding as well as grazing on his right hand.

Police were contacted and responded to the scene.

Mr Adu was taken to hospital where he required 13 stitches to close the wound. He was discharged with crutches.

McKay’s lawyer explained why his client overtook the car.

The defence solicitor said: “The vehicle suddenly slowed down as the driver noticed a large pothole - which is not uncommon.

“He (McKay) couldn’t see anything and was not expecting that as there was nothing in front of the driver so he reacted by trying to overtake thus causing the collision.

“He has never not accepted that it was him. He has no outstanding matters.”

Sheriff Anna Reid disqualified McKay from driving for 13 months. He was also placed on a community payback order with 135 hours of unpaid work.
