A FIRE has destroyed a home and killed a pet leaving a family with nothing.

The blaze happened yesterday at around 1.30pm after a hoverboard went up in flames while it was charging.

The family scrambled to escape the burning building but sadly could not save their one-year-old cat, Nico.

Devastated Abi Grant, 19, shouted her pet's name in a desperate bid to rescue him while her family begged her to get out the house.

She was then forced to make a dash out the backdoor and was helped by neighbours to flee the scene, then watched her house become engulfed in flames.

The family home in Dunside Way, Stonehouse in Lanarkshire has been gutted by the fire.

Now she is trying to rebuild her life with her family including stepdad Gary Little, 49, mum, Heather Little, 47, and her siblings Evie Little, 6, and Emma Grant, 15, and Lucy Grant, 11.

Speaking to the Glasgow Times, Abi said: “We had plugged in a hoverboard for an hour or so, and I had gone up stairs to grab some things and had heard rustling and crackling.

“I thought that maybe one of our cats was messing about in the cat tree, and I had gone to the top of the stairs to have a look and flames were blowing out of the hoverboard.

“I grabbed my dog and tried to get my cat and left the house running past the fire, unfortunately, my cat did not survive.

“I ran downstairs to the front door and let my dog run out. My mum and step dad were standing at the front door telling me to get out, but I ran into my living room to see about my cat.

“I was calling his name but he didn’t come to me so I ran out the back door.

"I shouted for help and my neighbours came running to me helping me climb my fence.

"I ran to the front garden watching the house, the windows smashed and all the popping from the inside.”

A GoFundMe has also been launched as their community has rallied round to support them on getting back on their feet.

This includes helping get some presents for Lucy who is due to turn 12 tomorrow (Saturday) while battling the shock of losing her home.

At the time of publishing this article, the fundraiser has reached more than £2,385 which is almost half of the £5,000 target.

The GoFundMe states: “Not only have they lost their home, they have lost all personal belongings.

“It is therefore hoped that during this difficult time, people of the community near or afar will consider making a contribution to this fund.

“Any amount would be greatly appreciated and will go towards helping this family purchase essential items they desperately need to rebuild their lives.

“Wee Evie only turned six on Wednesday, sadly she doesn't understand that she no longer has her birthday presents to play with.

“Added to this her older sister Lucy will be turning 12 this Saturday.

“In light of this if anyone has anything age appropriate this would also be very much welcomed.”
