A CELTIC fan who invaded the pitch during a match was today banned from football games for one year.

Kyle Mackay, 21, ran onto Celtic Park while a substitution took place on May 18, 2024.

The Hoops hosted St Mirren on the final day of the Scottish Premiership season in a match the champions won 3-2.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that Mackay was present at the game which kicked off at 12.30pm.

Prosecutor Emma Sangray said: "Around 2.15pm, he exited his seat and ran on the pitch. This caused alarm to the football players on the pitch.

"Mackay was apprehended by stewards on the pitch and handed to police. He was arrested and taken to a police station where he was cautioned and charged."

First offender Mackay, of Dornoch, Scottish Highlands, appeared today in court for sentencing with a green Celtic-branded backpack.

He had earlier pled guilty to a charge of breach of the peace.

John McGuire, defending, said: "The offence came at a point where there was a lull in play for a change of players.

"This is completely out of character for him and he cannot give me an explanation for why he committed the offence.

"He was suffering from an injury to his leg and was drinking while he was on medication which might give an explanation for it.

"He feels like he let himself down, his family down and his club down as he follows Celtic."

Sheriff Anna Reid ordered Mackay to do 65 hours of unpaid work as well as imposing the football ban.

The sheriff said: "This can be categorised as a foolish decision as to what happened that day.

"I take account that you are a first offender and pled guilty at the earliest opportunity."
