A MAN who was assaulted at a Glasgow hotel was later headbutted by the same attacker whilst speaking to police.

Graham Wilson, 62, whose address was not listed on court papers, was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court recently after pleading guilty to three charges.

He admitted to assaulting Michael Magee on two occasions and attacking a police officer.

The court heard that Michael Magee and another man, James Magee, were in the Crookston Hotel in the city’s Southside on August 12, 2023.

At around 7.30pm James Magee entered the toilets where he saw Wilson who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

The pair had a discussion and James Magee left and returned to the bar area.

Wilson followed shortly after and made a comment. At this time, Michael Magee stood up from his seat and was immediately headbutted by Wilson, resulting in members of the public and James Magee intervening.

Sheriff Mark McGuire revealed that the dispute was football-related, according to a criminal justice social work report.

The court went on to hear that Michael and James Magee then left the bar and called for a family member to pick them up.

As the pair got to the hotel’s main entrance they asked staff to contact police.

Officers arrived a few minutes later and were told about what happened. The two men then tried re-entering the bar area to point out Wilson but were asked to remain in the lobby to avoid further escalation.

Police were speaking to the pair, at which point, Wilson ran towards Michael Magee striking him with a flying headbutt and repeatedly punching him on the head and body.

Whilst cops tried to intervene Wilson threw a punch striking a police officer on the jaw.

Officers were eventually able to arrest him.

He was taken to Helen Street police station where he was cautioned and charged to which he replied: “I apologise, I wasn’t intending to hit any police”.

He was later released.

The procurator fiscal depute noted that Michael Magee suffered superficial cuts to his nose and bleeding to his nose and mouth but did not require any further medical treatment.

Wilson’s lawyer told the court that her client’s behaviour had been “completely out of character”.

The defence solicitor said: “This was a very distressing incident. He appears before the court as a first offender.

“He had been in the bar area with his wife that afternoon. His position is that he went to the bathroom, comments were made and the two men were supporters of opposing football teams.

“He has never been involved in anything like this before. He is ashamed and embarrassed.”

Addressing Wilson, Sheriff McGuire stated: “This was appalling behaviour on your part aggravated by the fact you appeared to be under the influence.

“You headbutt a man and then when he was speaking to police you launched a vicious and sustained attack on him for a second time.

“To make matters worse you assaulted a police officer trying to stop you.”

Sheriff McGuire fined Wilson £850.
