Public satisfaction with refuse collection and road maintenance in Glasgow have dropped, according to a new report.

Findings from the Glasgow Household Survey 2024 found satisfaction with recycling collection, street cleaning and pavement maintenance were broadly in line with the previous year.

But satisfaction with refuse collection and road maintenance both decreased by eight and four percentage points respectively from 56% to 12%.

The issue was raised at the most recent operations and scrutiny committee.

Councillor Eunis Jassemi said: “On waste management complaints, we’ve seen waste management and refuse collection complaints up by 23% while satisfaction has gone down to 56%.

“The clear capacity issues that cleansing is facing are now driving these statistics down, we are seeing a worsening of these services.

“Would you agree that our recycling and climate targets are in jeopardy going forward?”

The council’s Neighbourhoods Regeneraion and Sustainability department said it was tryng to deliver a more efficient waste collection and recycling service and this had benefited from investment in the last year.

An officer said the city was running a new recycling service to every kerbside back and front door property.

“That will improve the recycling provision, give them more resources and change the service. We are only half way through that delivery 60,000 properties to date.

“We are seeing significant improvements on recycling rates. We are also rolling out this service to flats and tenements which means every property in Glasgow will get access to the twin stream.”
