A Bellshill charity is set to benefit from a share of a £25,000 funding pot.

UTHEO, based in the town, was one of three good causes across the west of Scotland awarded the money thanks to Scotmid’s Community Connect initiative.

The funds were allocated following a vote by Scotmid members.

UTHEO is set to receive £5,000.

Chris Steggles, a project worker at UTHEO, said: "We are incredibly grateful to Scotmid for this generous funding.

"We continue to seek ways of addressing the social, economic, environmental and spiritual needs of the local community through the operation of Orbiston Neighbourhood Centre.

"With the funding, we will be able to continue providing our communities with this vital support."

The charity, whose key services are at its centre at the Orbiston Neighbourhood Centre, provides a range of assistance to the community including computer learning, a community café, a food co-op, volunteering and befriending.

The centre also provides out-of-school care, employability and older persons services.

They receive up to 1,000 visitors per week who benefit from the services it provides, as well as from the local groups and projects that also use the centre.

The other two good causes set to benefit from the Scotmid funding are Callum's Cabin and Paul's Parcels.

Callum's Cabin, which supports families who have a child with cancer, received £15,000, while Paul's Parcels, a charity that provides food parcels to families, received £5,000.
