A Glasgow actor known for his role in Fantastic Beasts has teamed up with fellow film and TV stars to front a major new modern slavery campaign.

Derek Riddell, who acted in Ugly Betty and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, has joined forces with modern slavery charity Causeway for the Stand With Survivors campaign.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of modern slavery and educate the public on signs that indicate someone may be experiencing modern slavery and exploitation.

In a special film produced for the campaign, Riddell explains how modern slavery "can be hidden in plain sight and is happening in towns and cities across the UK."

He said: "It is important we know that modern slavery is out there, and there are people experiencing it right now."

Other celebrities fronting Causeway’s Stand With Survivors campaign include Mr Bates vs the Post Office star and BAFTA-nominee Julie Hesmondhalgh, stand-up comedian and After Life actor Kerry Godliman, and chef and Great British Menu host Andi Oliver.

He said: “Modern slavery and exploitation can take several different forms, but every single one of them is abusive, traumatic and cruel.

"Everybody has the right to feel safe and have autonomy over their lives, however this can be ripped away from survivors of modern slavery."

Hesmondhalgh said: “Causeway support some of the most marginalised people in our society.

"Their experiences and voices are all too often not heard or valued.

"I am honoured to be involved with this Stand With Survivors campaign, and hope it will shine a much-needed spotlight on modern slavery, and help towards creating lasting change for the brave survivors affected by it.”

According to recent referral statistics, modern slavery continues to exist in Scotland, and across the whole of the UK.
