A new Chinese restaurant in Bishopbriggs has been granted an on-sales alcohol licence from East Dunbartonshire Licensing Board.

The restaurant will open in formerly empty premises in Auchinairn Road which are being converted to their new purpose at a cost of around £150,000. It will employ six staff.

The licence covers the restaurant itself, which will have a capacity of around 100 people, and allows the playing of background music as well as the hosting of private receptions.

Children will be admitted to the premises so long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Operating hours will be in line with local licensing policy, which means opening at 11am every day and closing at midnight on weekdays and 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Health and Social Care Partnership objected to children being permitted on the premises at all hours and instead requested that they leave by 10.30pm or an hour earlier if unaccompanied and that they also be kept away from the bar or larger groups of adults drinking alcohol.

The applicant’s representative responded to the objection by saying there were no hours specified in licensing policy relevant to the application and 16 or 17-year-olds can be married, serve in the armed forces and vote in some elections so it was “overkill” to impose such restrictions, and also questioned how practical it would be to keep younger customers away from others.

He also said the applicant, who also runs a similar business in Anniesland, would run the restaurant in a responsible manner and would exercise discretion on allowing younger customers into the premises.

Following a period of deliberation, the board unanimously granted the application.
