TWO talented youngsters have been crowned as the winners of a top dance event after only having days to prepare.

Kyro McLafferty, seven, and Willow Craig, nine, dazzled under the glitterball at Strictly Kids last weekend taking home the top prize.

The duo, from Clydebank, revealed that they only had three rehearsals prior to the competition which was held at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Glasgow.

Kyro said: “I felt excited but also a wee bit nervous because we never really had much time to practise.

“It was kind of scary because we just had the weekend before the competition to practise but I am so happy and excited to have won.”

Willow added: “I was a bit nervous but once I got on stage I was absolutely fine and I was loving it.

"It feels amazing to have won.”

Kyro and Willow, who are both pupils at April’s Street Feet (ASF) in Clydebank, performed their take on the Charleston and blew judges away, receiving a standing ovation.

April McLafferty, Kyro’s mum and owner of ASF, explained why the duo had, had such a short amount of time to get ready for the event.

She said: “We’d left it so late. A lot of the kids start rehearsing in the summer but we were so busy with our shows and competitions.

“I told Kyro we could leave it this year but he said ‘no, no, no I want to do it’ he was so determined.

“They had two one-hour rehearsals with the coach that Strictly provided and then we did everything else at the dance studio.

“I had a big lamp from our dance show and we chose to do Aladdin and the genie as our theme to save some time.

“We came back from our holiday on the Friday, and Kyro and Willow spent all of Saturday practising before the competition on Sunday.

“I’m so proud of them. I turned around to Willow’s mum and I was nearly in tears. When it came to their turn the four judges all stood up for the first time that night.”

As the youngsters exited the dancefloor they received feedback from the judging panel which featured Eddie Slattery who has choreographed routines for Strictly Come Dancing.

He praised Kyro and Willow for their routine crowning it one of his favourites of the day.

Eddie said: “Wow, that was for me so far the routine of the day. I’m very lucky that I get to choreograph the Charlestons on Strictly and you showed me so much amazing content.

“The way you were working together is phenomenal. It was just everything I wanted.”
