A landmark is being torn down after more than 50 years in Hamilton.

Workers have been spotted demolishing the old UWS building on Almada Street this week.

The former university building officially closed in 2018 as students moved to a £110m Lanarkshire Campus, based in Hamilton International Technology Park.

Since then it has suffered broken windows and graffiti, but is now being flattened as cranes and bulldozers were pictured tearing it down.

Lanarkshire County Council first acquired the site for ‘Hamilton Technical College’ and Bell College then opened in 1972.

It then joined with the University of Paisley in 2007 to become the University of the West of Scotland.

Now South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) and UWS have brought together their respective landholdings to create a major development opportunity.

The area will be transformed into an exciting development in the heart of the town of Hamilton.

The site has scope to accommodate a variety of uses including residential, retirement, care provision, leisure, retail and hotel.

One resident who photographed the demolition said: “I work nearby and noticed they have started to tear it down.

“I think they may have been stripping it for a while, but not properly ripping it down.

“My car is covered in dust from the work because they are really going at it now.

“I went to Easter study school when it was bell college, very fond memories.”

South Lanarkshire Council confirmed demolition work has begun.

The University Of West of Scotland has been contacted for comment.
